Rome, Italy — May 13, 2026

The Italian Parliament definitively approved a constitutional reform on May 13, 2026, strengthening the autonomy of South Tyrol and Trentino, with 129 votes in favor, no opposition, and 48 abstentions.

Key Changes in the Reform

The reform introduces significant updates to the legal framework governing South Tyrol and Trentino. Among the most notable changes is the new official designation of the region as "Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol," formally recognizing both the Italian and German names. Additionally, the provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino will now be explicitly labeled as "autonomous" in constitutional texts.

The adjustments aim to reinforce the special status of the region, which has long sought greater self-governance. The reform aligns with historical agreements, including the 1972 Autonomy Statute, which granted South Tyrol extensive legislative and administrative powers. The latest amendments further solidify these provisions, ensuring clearer legal recognition of the provinces' autonomy.
