Italy's health ministry issued its highest-level heat advisory on Thursday as record-high temperatures swept across parts of central and southern Europe, prompting warnings from meteorological agencies and government officials.

GeoSphere Austria, the country's national weather and geophysics service, reported that Austria was among the nations affected by the heatwave, with readings climbing through the week across central Europe. Forecasters linked the prolonged conditions to a stagnant high-pressure system parked over the region, which has suppressed cloud cover and rainfall since late July.
