Jellyfish plague temporarily shuts down several reactors at the French Gravelines nuclear site

Background: The Gravelines site

Gravelines is one of France's largest nuclear sites and is located on the northern French coast between Dunkirk and Calais. The facility has several reactor units that feed into the French power grid. Due to its position on the English Channel and its proximity to the warm extension of the Gulf Stream, the site is particularly vulnerable to marine biological influences.

Last year, the site already had to contend with a similar situation: jellyfish had then entered the filtration systems of the water pumping stations in large numbers and disrupted operations. The renewed incident makes clear that the problem has not yet been permanently resolved. EDF said it was now examining possible technical adjustments to better protect the filters in the future.

Several reactor units were taken off the grid by the event, which is likely to have an impact on electricity generation in the region. EDF initially did not comment on specific numbers of affected units or on the duration of the restart. The operator pointed out that the reactors could be gradually brought back online after the jellyfish had been removed and the filters cleaned.

Reactions and possible consequences for power supply

France relies heavily on nuclear power and covers the lion's share of its electricity needs with its 56 reactors. Incidents such as the one at Gravelines are therefore closely watched both nationally and internationally, even though there are no safety concerns. According to observers, the French electricity market has so far reacted calmly to the outage of individual units.

Marine biologists see the accumulation of such incidents in the context of rising sea temperatures and changing current patterns in the English Channel. Jellyfish populations could therefore increasingly be found closer to the coast in the future, and thus also near the cooling water systems of industrial facilities. However, no direct link between the latest incident and the climate has been officially confirmed.

Is the incident repeating itself?

The incident is also reminiscent of earlier events in which marine organisms disrupted the operation of energy infrastructure – for example in Scotland or Japan. Unlike incidents with serious safety consequences, jellyfish clogging is a known phenomenon for which plants are generally technically prepared. Whether the Gravelines site will receive additional protective measures is to be decided in the coming days.

EDF announced that it would comprehensively analyze the incident and submit a report to the French nuclear safety authority ASN. Until then, the affected part of the facility will remain out of operation. According to the operator, residents do not have to expect any restrictions, as neither radiation nor other hazards have been detected.
