The Chinese Jingye Group on Sunday demanded full compensation from the British government for its investments in British Steel and announced legal action, including international arbitration.
Background: Nationalization of British Steel
The British government's nationalization of British Steel had taken place the previous week. On Sunday, the Jingye Group addressed the public via the Chinese short-messaging service WeChat and issued a series of tough demands to London. The group said it would "hold legally accountable" the British government and the management of British Steel and, in doing so, would also push for compensation "in the name of British taxpayers."
In its statement, the group accused London of using British law to "trample" international investment rules. The Jingye Group stressed that since taking over in early 2020 it had invested in plant and technology, paid taxes, and created "tens of thousands of jobs." The British government, however, had "disregarded" these ongoing investments and contributions and was only willing to pay "almost zero compensation." "The UK disregarded Jingye's continuous investment and significant contribution and was only willing to provide almost zero compensation," the company said.
