A two-week heatwave in June 2026 cost the German economy at least €6.3 billion, according to a Prognos calculation presented on Thursday by the "Handelsblatt."

Distribution of Damages Across Sectors

As the "Handelsblatt" reported, citing calculations by the consulting firm Prognos, the extreme temperatures in the last two weeks of June 2026 came to €6.32 billion. This made the heatwave the most expensive weather event of the year so far. Germany experienced temperatures of up to 41.7 degrees Celsius in June this year – a new record for the month, according to the report.

The largest share of the damages, around €1.9 billion, was borne by the manufacturing sector, followed by the health and social services sector and retail. In the health and social services sector, costs amounted to about €662 million per day. The food industry lost around €196 million due to heat stress on plants, higher energy costs for cooling systems, and declining milk yields from cows.
