Stefanie Hubig (SPD) has announced a law intended to prevent right-wing extremists from being elected as volunteer lay judges at German courts.

Background: Warnings of infiltration

The politician told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) that there are indications that an increasing number of candidates are applying as lay judges who no longer stand on the ground of the free democratic basic order. "Anyone who wants to become a lay judge must behave in a manner loyal to the Constitution. We will make this clear in law," said Hubig. Her ministry is currently working on a corresponding draft "that is intended to regulate more clearly the loyalty to the Constitution and the election of lay judges."
