Lima, July 4, 2026

The conservative politician Keiko Fujimori has been declared the new president of the country by the Peruvian electoral authority following the runoff election of June 7 and will take office on July 28.

The margin was exceedingly narrow: according to the electoral authority, Fujimori received 50.1 percent of the votes, while her left-wing rival Roberto Sanchez received 49.9 percent. The difference corresponded to roughly 50,000 votes out of a total of about 18 million cast. "Dies ist der Beginn einer neuen Phase", explained Fujimori after the announcement. "Wir nehmen sie mit Verantwortung, Demut und einem tiefen Pflichtgefühl an."

The head of the electoral commission, Roberto Burneo, said on Friday at a ceremony in Lima: "Ich erkläre Frau Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi zur Präsidentin der Republik." Fujimori in turn announced the "Beginn eines neuen Kapitels" in the history of Peru. Her defeated opponent Sanchez, who is considered the political heir of the ousted left-winger Pedro Castillo, announced that he would not recognize Fujimori's government.

Political Legacy of a Controversial Dynasty

For the 51-year-old politician, this is her fourth presidential candidacy – three previous attempts ended in failure. Fujimori became First Lady at the age of 19, when her father Alberto Fujimori held the presidency. The former president ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000 and remains an extremely controversial figure in the country to this day.
