Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil defended the German federal government's reform package in the ARD summer interview on Sunday, explaining both the new regulation requiring a sick note from the first day of illness and the budget planning for 2027.

Compromise on sick notes

Speaking with ARD, the SPD chairman and Vice Chancellor stressed that employees would no longer have to drag themselves to the doctor or to work while ill. "Ihr müsst euch nicht krank zum Arzt schleppen und auch nicht krank auf die Arbeit schleppen," Klingbeil said verbatim. A sick note will indeed be required from the first day, but does not have to be "obtained" from day one, according to the finance minister.
