SPD chairwoman Bärbel Bas has criticized the plan negotiated with the Union to make a doctor's sick note mandatory from the first day of illness and has demanded renegotiations.

Bärbel Bas expressed doubts about the plan to send employees to the doctor already on the first day of illness. She fears that a brief absence could ultimately turn into a longer period of sick leave.

"My concern is that people with a mild infection will go to the doctor on the first day, and what starts as a brief absence ends up becoming a whole week of sick leave," said Bas.

Münster retreat as starting point

The plan was part of a paper adopted by the parliamentary group leaders of the Union and SPD on Friday at a retreat in Münster. The paper lists the joint reform projects that are to be fully implemented by the end of the year.
