The Latvian opera singer Elīna Garanča was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Lower Austria on Saturday evening in Grafenegg.

The honor was presented as part of the concert evening "Classics Under the Stars," which after 17 years at Göttweig Abbey took place for the first time at the Wolkenturm Grafenegg. Lower Austria's State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) presented the award and praised the artist for her long-standing ties with the state.

Praise from the Landhaus

Mikl-Leitner referred to the radiance of the concert series: "Zehntausende Besucherinnen und Besucher haben gesehen, dass Weltklasse nicht nur in New York oder London erlebbar ist – sondern auch in Niederösterreich." For this, one wanted to "heute Danke sagen." With the series, Garanča has "einen kulturellen Leuchtturm geschaffen, der Niederösterreich weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus sichtbar macht," the State Governor said according to a press release. With a smile, she added that the decoration also "auch gut auf dem Opernball tragen" lässt.
