Paris, 08 July 2026
Marine Le Pen announced her candidacy for the 2027 presidential election on Tuesday evening on French television channel TF1 and simultaneously filed an appeal against the appeals court verdict in the proceedings concerning the embezzlement of public funds.
Candidacy and Appeal
The right-wing populist Marine Le Pen declared on Tuesday evening on channel TF1: «Heute Abend bin ich Kandidatin für die Präsidentschaftswahl.» Prior to this, a Paris appeals court had upheld the original verdict against her. The politician announced her intention to challenge the verdict with a legal remedy and added: «Jordan Bardella und ich werden sehr bald mit dem Präsidentschaftswahlkampf beginnen».
The appeals court had upheld the conviction for embezzlement of public funds. According to the ruling, Le Pen and other party officials are said to have misused EU funds between 2004 and 2016. Parliamentary staff were allegedly paid with funds from the European Parliament even though they had worked at least partly for the party. The verdict includes a three-year prison sentence, of which two years are suspended and one year is to be served with an electronic ankle monitor, a fine of 100,000 euros, as well as a 45-month ban from holding public office, of which 30 months are suspended.
