Berlin, 9 July 2026
The Left faction in the Bundestag has taken stock of its campaign against excessive rents, launched in November 2024, and counted around 10,000 households that have reported their rents to the authorities via the so-called rent usury app.
Legal Framework
Since the start of the campaign in November 2024, 10,255 households have reported their excessive rents to the responsible agencies, according to the Left faction. The faction said in Berlin on Wednesday that this was a clear sign that the app had "etwas in Bewegung gesetzt" ("set something in motion"). On average, the reported rents were 66 percent above the local reference values – and thus well above the threshold at which, under German law, an administrative offence may be deemed to have occurred.
