Leipzig, July 3, 2026

After more than two days of a complete suspension of tram service, seven of 13 lines are now running partially in Leipzig; the Leipzig Transport Authority (LVB) expects all key routes to be back in operation by the middle of next week.

Cause: Melted Bitumen on the Rails

The trigger was enormous: The heat caused the joint compound between the rails and the asphalt to melt and run into the rails and switches. About ten percent of the 300-kilometer-long tram network was affected by heat damage. For safety reasons, the Leipzig Transport Authority (LVB) had suspended regular tram service.

Since early Wednesday evening, trams have been running with restrictions on six lines. Most recently, Line 7 was put back into service between the east and the city center. It now runs between Philipp-Reis-Straße and Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, and between Paunsdorf Straßenbahnhof and Sommerfeld. Line 15 is expected to resume service from the evening onward.
