A lightning strike on a high-altitude mountain meadow in the Swiss canton of Valais killed 97 Valais Blacknose sheep during the night leading into Friday. The animals had been deployed as landscape managers.

The lightning struck a meadow at the Eggerhorn at 2,503 meters above sea level in the Binntal, south of the Rhone. At the time of the strike, all the animals were standing close together in a fenced area. As reported by the news agency Keystone-SDA, more than half of a flock of sheep lost their lives.

The online portal "pomona.ch" was the first to report the incident. The responsible authorities and the affected farm were informed after the animals failed to return on Friday morning.

The killed animals were Valais Blacknose sheep, a breed common in Switzerland that is traditionally used for landscape management in alpine regions. The animals graze on high-altitude meadows during the summer months to keep them open.
