A 34-year-long study by the British University of Warwick with participants from Bavaria shows that people who were born very early or with very low birth weight today have good chances of a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life as adults.
The researchers observed 416 people over a period of 34 years, about half of whom were born prematurely. According to the study published in the journal "JAMA Pediatrics," it is one of the longest studies of its kind worldwide. The focus was primarily on the social development of the participants.
The central finding: Slightly more than half of the children born very early or with very low birth weight exhibited optimal functioning in adulthood in the areas of risk avoidance, prosperity, and social relationships. This was stated by Elif Gönen from the Institute of Psychology at the University of Warwick.
