Extreme Readings on the Danube and Elbe

The drought across large parts of Germany is leaving clear marks on the country's most important waterways. According to the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), the lowest water level ever recorded was measured on the Danube in recent days. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has also been registering low water at numerous gauges on the Rhine and Elbe for days. At the Dresden gauge, the Elbe stood at 59 centimeters on Wednesday — nearly 90 centimeters below average.

The effects on freight transport are tangible. According to the German Inland Shipping Association (BDB), vessels can currently carry only 30 to 40 percent of their usual cargo. Association representative Fabian Spieß summed up the situation with the words: „Die Schifffahrt fährt, solange es sicher möglich ist." Official closures by the WSV have not yet been imposed. However, transport costs are rising along the supply chain, because more vessels are needed to move the same volume of goods.
