Kaub, 14 August 2026
The water level of the Rhine at the Kaub gauge has fallen into single digits according to the shipping industry, further tightening the already narrow bottleneck for inland shipping.
At the Kaub narrows, where the Middle Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz is squeezed to a width of just a few hundred meters, the gauge slipped into single digits on Friday. At this point, values below 40 centimeters had already been considered critical in recent years; a single-digit value effectively means a standstill for the majority of cargo vessels. The water level at the Kaub gauge is regarded as a decisive factor for the navigability of the Rhine between the industrial centers on the Middle and Lower Rhine and the ports on the North Sea.
