Economic Consequences for Industry and Ports

The BDB considers the Rhine to be the central lifeline for German industry. The waterway is used to transport coal, steel, chemical products, and containers between the seaports of Antwerp and Rotterdam and industrial centers inland. Falling water levels increase freight costs and reduce the utilization of ships.

The industry association also expects that the record lows will additionally burden traffic on the Main, the Neckar, and the Main-Danube Canal. If these secondary waterways drop out as alternative routes, many companies would lack a predictable alternative.

Summit in Bonn: Transport Minister Confirmed

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has, according to the BDB, confirmed his participation in the low-water summit in Bonn. The focus of the discussions will be short-term measures such as adjusted ship tonnage, depth measurements, and coordination with freight forwarders and shippers.

The association points out that in previous low-water years, national summits have already been convened to limit the consequences for the economy. This time as well, it is primarily about better coordinating carriers, ports, and industrial customers.

In the meantime, environmental associations have called for more careful use of water. They point out that several rivers in Germany are carrying well below average water levels and that shoreline areas have already dried out. Without additional protective measures, a further worsening is imminent.

Weather Forecast and Duration of Restrictions

The weather service expects isolated showers in the coming days, but no sustained change in the weather. As long as precipitation remains absent, the situation on the Rhine will hardly ease, according to experts.

The BDB expects the current restrictions to last at least until mid-August. If the water levels continue to fall, shipping on individual routes will have to be completely halted, the association explained. This would have immediate consequences for deliveries to power plants, steelworks, and the chemical industry.
