Railway renovation on schedule, low water levels hamper river burials, and debate over mobile phones in schools

Patrick Schnieder and Deutsche Bahn presented the renovation offensive at the end of last year under the name "Generalsanierung" (general renovation). Its core is the comprehensive renewal of the most important corridors in bundled, longer closure periods instead of many individual construction sites. The first corridors are already being implemented, with further ones to follow in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the persistent low water levels on the Rhine are also affecting unusual areas. Because of the low water levels, no river burials are currently possible, funeral directors and waterway authorities said. Water burials were considered an alternative form of memorial service, but they depend on stable water levels. In the event of prolonged drought, mourners would have to resort to other forms or postpone the ceremony.

The Rhine has been carrying significantly less water than usual for weeks. According to measurements by the responsible gauge stations, water levels are in some cases well below the seasonal averages. The low water is also affecting inland shipping: cargo ships can carry less, and ferry operators have to adjust their piers and routes.

The meteorological situation also paints a mixed picture. While heavy rainfall is expected in parts of southern Germany, conditions remain dry across large parts of the west and northwest. This is regionally worsening the drought, even though individual thunderstorms bring little relief. Water levels on the Rhine respond to rainfall in its catchment area with a delay of days to weeks.

Meanwhile, a move by CDU General Secretary Steffen Bilger is attracting attention in the school policy debate. Bilger had spoken out in favor of a nationwide mobile phone ban in schools, thereby reigniting the ongoing discussion. The CDU parliamentary group in the Bundestag explicitly supports the line, according to its own statements. Advocates point to improved concentration and less distraction in class.

Critics of a blanket ban counter that smartphones have long been part of everyday life in many families and that a ban alone does not replace digital education. Teachers' and parents' associations are instead calling for clear rules on how devices are used and for better equipment in schools. Irrigation as adaptation to climate change

Separately, water supply in agriculture is coming into focus. According to the "Mannheimer Morgen," a Europe-wide unique system is the Beregnungsverband Vorderpfalz (Vorderpfalz irrigation association): "Wie der 'Mannheimer Morgen' berichtete, ist der Beregnungsverband Vorderpfalz ein europaweit einzigartiges System. Mit rund 600 Kilometern Leitung versorgt er 13.500 Hektar landwirtschaftliche Fläche zwischen Otterstadt im Süden und Heßheim im Norden." In view of increasingly frequent dry phases, the importance of such irrigation networks is growing.

The climatic conditions are also posing new challenges for waterways. In addition to the Rhine, the Danube, Elbe, and Main are affected when water levels fall. Authorities are reviewing adjustments to navigation rules and port access to ensure the supply of goods. At the same time, pressure is mounting to expand irrigation infrastructure in agriculture.

Overall, the day presents a mix of progress reports, everyday burdens, and political decision points. Deutsche Bahn considers itself on course with its renovation, water levels remain tense, and a fundamental debate is brewing in school policy that will extend beyond the summer break.
