Luca Karl finishes eighth at Open Water European Championships in the Seine

For Luca Karl, the race was nevertheless an experience. After the competition, the swimmer said he was impressed by the unique backdrop in Paris. Karl emphasised the special atmosphere that such a major event in the middle of a world city brings with it.

The European open-water swimming championship has been a showcase event for European swimming federations for years. This year as well, the events along the Seine drew numerous spectators, who were able to follow the race from the banks.

High security measures along the Seine

Security measures around the Seine were once again high, after water quality had been intensively tested in the run-up to the competitions. In recent weeks, the organisers had invested significantly in cleaning the river. The responsible authorities cleared the water for the competitions following several days of tests.

The German Swimming Federation expressed satisfaction with the performance of its athletes. Alongside Wellbrock's triumph, Karl also placed in the top ten as a German athlete. The federation interpreted the results as evidence of the growing depth within the German open-water squad.

Outlook on upcoming competitions

From a European perspective, the race was regarded as a benchmark ahead of the upcoming international season highlights. For many athletes, it was the first form test under competitive conditions at the highest level. Wellbrock meanwhile announced his intention to continue his successful career in open water. He said the triumph in Paris was a further incentive to continue competing for medals in the future. His next major goal would be preparation for the upcoming World Championships.

The European Championships in Paris will continue until the end of the week with further swimming and open-water events. In the coming days as well, the German athletes will be competing in several disciplines. The medal hunt in the Seine is therefore not yet over.
