Vienna's Mayor Michael Ludwig has once again demanded direct billing of treatment costs for guest patients from abroad and pointed to the high financial burden on the city caused by this patient group.

According to his own statements, Ludwig, as mayor, advocates the introduction of direct billing with foreign insurance carriers for guest patients treated in Vienna. The aim is to have hospital costs — which today often remain uncollectable at Vienna's hospitals — settled directly with the insurers of the patients' countries of origin. Vienna is among those federal states that care for a particularly large number of foreign patients and therefore shoulder a disproportionately high level of upfront expenditure.
