The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko called on Russia and Ukraine to show willingness to compromise in the war, which has been ongoing for more than four years, in an interview with the Arab television channel Al Arabiya.
Words of de-escalation
Lukashenko said a military victory was unrealistic for neither of the two conflict parties. "Ein militärischer Sieg sei für beide Seiten unrealistisch," he stated. At the same time, he acknowledged: "Zwar rückten die russischen Truppen vor," but "litten beide Kriegsparteien unter einem Mangel an Soldaten." With these remarks, he indirectly denied Russia the ability to win the war of aggression on the battlefield.
In the interview, which was broadcast on Monday, Lukashenko formulated a clear appeal for a negotiated solution: "Heute müssen wir jeden Schritt nutzen, um durch Kompromisse zu einer friedlichen Einigung zu gelangen. Langfristig." He called on both sides to make concessions to end the war. At the same time, he emphasized: "Die Ukraine hat von Belarus aus nichts zu befürchten," and reiterated that Belarusian soldiers would not participate in the fighting.
