Clashes on the Champs-Élysées

The most intense confrontations unfolded along the Champs-Élysées, where thousands of supporters had gathered. President Macron addressed the violence directly during the team's reception at the Élysée Palace. "Ich will mich nicht daran gewöhnen," he said, making clear his refusal to accept such scenes as normal. He announced a tough crackdown on those responsible.

The president's tone grew increasingly firm as he addressed the nation's fatigue with recurring post-match violence. "Wir wollen nicht, dass sich dies wiederholt. Es ist vorbei. Wir haben genug. Das muss ein Ende haben," Macron stated, signaling a zero-tolerance policy moving forward.

A Celebration Divided

Earlier in the day, the victorious PSG squad had been received near the Eiffel Tower, where numerous supporters gathered peacefully at the Champ de Mars to cheer captain Marquinhos and coach Luis Enrique. The contrast between the calm daytime reception and the nighttime chaos underscored the dual nature of the celebrations.

The Interior Ministry cautioned that the arrest and injury figures could still change as further evaluations are conducted. Authorities continue to review video evidence and social media footage to identify additional suspects involved in the looting and arson.

The riots have reignited debate in France about security protocols for large-scale sporting celebrations and the persistent challenge of preventing fringe groups from hijacking public gatherings. Law enforcement unions have called for additional resources and stricter penalties for those who attack officers.

Security and Political Fallout

PSG's victory marked the club's second Champions League title, repeating their success from the previous year. The achievement, which should have been a moment of national pride, has instead been overshadowed by the widespread criminality that followed.

Interior Minister Nuñez emphasized that the government had foreseen the potential for violence and had prepared accordingly, but stressed that anticipation does not equate to acceptance. The ministry is now facing questions about whether the security deployment, despite its scale, was sufficient to prevent the destruction.

Local officials in affected cities have begun assessing the damage, with early reports indicating significant property destruction, particularly from vehicle fires and looting of commercial establishments.
