Polish qualifier Maja Chwalińska reached the semi-finals of the French Open on Wednesday in Paris with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 victory over Russia's Anna Kalinskaya, seeded 22nd.

A historic entry

The 24-year-old Pole, ranked 114th in the world, made her main draw debut at the clay court Grand Slam on Court Philippe-Chatrier and advanced to the semi-finals as a qualifier. In the eight matches on her way there, including the qualifying rounds, Chwalińska lost only one set. Against Kalinskaya, who had previously beaten Anastasia Potapova in three sets in the third round, the underdog needed 7-6 (7:3) and 6-3.

After the match, Chwalińska was visibly moved. "Honestly, I don't know what's happening right now. Every single match here is kind of crazy for me. I'm very grateful," she said. In an on-court interview on Court Philippe-Chatrier, she added: "I was definitely nervous. I was stressed and tried to focus on my job and my game. I'm happy I managed to do it." When asked about her plans before the semi-final, the Pole replied: "Just sleep, my tea, maybe watch a bit of Netflix – and then I'll be fine."
