In the East Tyrolean municipality of Virgen, a forest fire broke out on Friday afternoon, with around 170 emergency personnel from twelve fire departments as well as five helicopters deployed to combat it.
The fire was reported around 4 p.m., prompting the initial alarm of the Virgen fire department. The operation subsequently expanded to twelve fire departments from the region, which tackled the flames in the so-called Mitteldorf forest with ground forces. According to the Lienz district fire department association, around 170 emergency personnel were at the scene by evening.
According to the district fire department association, five helicopters are in operation to provide air support. These are conducting water drops over the fire area and coordinating work with the ground teams. In addition, local farmers with slurry tanks are at the scene to ensure the on-site supply of extinguishing water.
