In the night of June 28, 2026, anti-terror units and the army carried out a large-scale raid on suspicion of corruption in Baghdad's heavily secured government district, the so-called Green Zone, and made several arrests.
In the heavily secured government district of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, several arrests were made overnight. According to information from news agencies, the searches targeted several officials and politicians on corruption charges. Anti-terror units as well as the army were said to have been involved in the operation. The Green Zone, where high-ranking politicians also live with their families, was temporarily cordoned off.
Military operations there are extremely rare. On social media, videos could be seen of tanks and military vehicles in the so-called Green Zone, where government facilities as well as embassies of the USA and other countries are located. Videos from the night also show extended bursts of gunfire. Further footage showed special forces entering some houses during suspected raids.
