Vienna, 23 May 2026
Austria's first mandatory summer school program has attracted 48,200 student registrations nationwide, including 14,300 mandated attendees, marking a 20% increase from last year's voluntary program.
The summer school initiative, originally launched in 2020 to address pandemic-related learning gaps, has expanded this year to include compulsory attendance for students in German support classes. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr emphasized the program's growing importance, stating: "Die steigenden Anmeldezahlen sowohl was Lehrende, als auch Schülerinnen und Schüler betrifft, unterstreichen die besondere Bedeutung der Sommerschule als nachhaltiges Unterstützungsangebot im österreichischen Bildungssystem".
Vienna leads in registrations with 13,700 students (5,700 mandated), followed by Lower Austria with 9,400 (1,400 mandated). Other regions show similar patterns, with voluntary participants outnumbering required attendees in all provinces except Vienna.
