Mandatory Summer School Sees 20% Rise in Registrations Across Austria

The program specifically targets students currently in German support classes who won't transition to regular classes next year - approximately 16,000 children nationwide. By 2027, attendance will become mandatory for all students in German support courses.

Education officials report that 33,900 students have registered voluntarily, drawn by specialized programming. Teacher participation has similarly grown, with 6,800 educators signing up - including 4,800 currently active teachers and 2,000 teacher trainees or retirees. This represents a 20% increase from 2025's 5,600 volunteers.

Educators receive either €60 per hour or a one-hour weekly teaching reduction in the following school year. "Denn wer insbesondere auch im Sommer die deutsche Sprache spricht, hat im neuen Schuljahr einen klaren Startvorteil," noted ministry representatives.

Teacher Incentives and Concerns

However, some educators express concerns about actual attendance rates. Paul Kimberger, head of the compulsory school teachers' association, cautioned: "Zwar ist die Zahl der Anmeldungen immer recht groß, die Präsenz dann aber dramatisch geringer."

The program runs during the last two weeks of summer vacation and combines language support with enrichment activities. Students skipping mandatory sessions face potential €1,000 fines for violating school attendance laws.

While most mandated students have registered, approximately 1,800 required attendees remain unaccounted for ahead of the May 19 deadline. Officials expect these registrations to be completed in the coming days.

The summer school expansion reflects Austria's broader educational strategy to address language barriers early. Last year's voluntary program served 41,100 students, with participation growing steadily since the pandemic-era launch.
