Vienna Summer School Sees Sharp Rise in Registrations

Since 2022, the program has also been open to students with special interests and talents. This gradually expanded the initiative, which was originally focused on Covid catch-up measures. This year, for the first time, a focus is being placed on language support to specifically assist children with language support needs.

Mandatory for German Support Classes

For the first time this year, the summer school is mandatory for children in German support classes. This regulation is intended to ensure that students with language deficits receive targeted support during the holidays as well. According to ministry figures, the requirement affects around 15,700 registered children and young people.

The summer school runs over several holiday weeks and takes place in all federal states, including Vienna, Lower Austria, Salzburg, and Tyrol. It is aimed at primary school and middle school students and offers both learning support and leisure activities.

Focus on Language Support This Year

The significant increase in registration numbers is seen within the ministry as confirmation that it is on the right track. The combination of voluntary and mandatory participation allows the program to be broadly distributed and reaches both high-performing students and those in need of support.

With the new focus on language support, the Ministry of Education is responding to the growing number of children whose first language is not German. The summer school is thus intended to contribute to equal opportunity in language skills and to ease the transition into the next school year.

Registration and Organization

Parents can continue to register their children for the summer school, provided places are available. Registration takes place directly through the schools or the education directorates of the respective federal states. With the registration phase ending in the first two holiday weeks, it is becoming apparent that capacities at many locations are fully exhausted.

For the coming years, the ministry plans to further expand the program and establish the summer school as a permanent fixture of Austria's educational landscape. The focus will be on supporting children with special needs as well as on language support.
