Vienna Summer School 2026: 11,000 Students Begin

Organization and Locations

The summer school in Vienna is organized by Municipal Department 10 (Kindergartens and Schools), but it is coordinated by the Organisation der Sommerschule, a dedicated body also responsible for quality assurance and teacher training. In terms of content, the first two weeks focus primarily on German as a subject, followed by additional modules. In addition to Vienna, Lower Austria also offers its own summer school program, which according to the education directorate is likewise aimed at several locations specifically targeting students in need of language support.

A key focus is on the so-called Deutsch-Förderklassen (German support classes) or Deutschförderklassen. These classes were introduced to bring children with little or no German skills into the mainstream school system as early as possible. The summer school complements this offering during the holidays and is intended to prevent learning gaps from widening over the summer. Teachers report that after three weeks of summer school, many children can communicate noticeably more confidently in everyday classroom life.

Political Debate Over Support Structure

Politically, the model is assessed differently. While NEOS and parts of the Vienna city government present the summer school as an effective instrument of language and equal opportunity support, the FPÖ repeatedly expresses fundamental criticism of the support structure and calls for a stronger separation between regular teaching and language support. The opposition argues that although the summer school can point to individual successes, it does not solve the structural problems in Vienna's compulsory school system.

For this year's summer school, according to the Organisation der Sommerschule, around 11,000 registrations have been recorded, meaning capacities at most locations are largely exhausted. The city expects that additional children will be added at short notice over the coming weeks. Once again this year, additional trained educators are being deployed to keep class sizes as small as possible.

Outlook on the School Year

Elisabeth Fuchs, head of the Organisation der Sommerschule, described this year's start as smooth. The locations are well-staffed and the materials for German language support have been further developed. Adolf Solly, spokesperson for the Vienna school administration, also confirmed that there had been no significant organizational problems at most locations.

With the end of the summer school in the final week of the holidays, the regular 2026/27 school year begins for the children and young people concerned. Education experts see the summer school as an important transitional element, but also stress that year-round language support during regular school operations remains necessary to secure long-term success. The City of Vienna announced that it would continue and evaluate the program in the coming year.
