Record national team player Lothar Matthäus has called for an end to the tenure of national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann following the German football national team's elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup against Paraguay (3:4 on penalties).
Nagelsmann under pressure
The German team had been eliminated in the round of the last 16 on the previous matchday by Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who saved three penalties in the shootout and was subsequently named Man of the Match. Following the 26-year-old keeper, the sporting debate quickly turned to the future of the national team head coach. In an interview with the Bild newspaper, Matthäus, who is 65 years old and has played the most international matches for the German national team, clearly spoke out in favor of a personnel overhaul."Ich glaube, dass es nach dieser Weltmeisterschaft mit einem neuen Trainer weitergehen muss. Das war einfach zu viel. Es gibt wahrscheinlich einiges aufzuarbeiten, auf dem Platz, außerhalb des Platzes", said Matthäus. He does not see the lost match as an isolated slip-up:"Ein Spiel kann immer passieren. Aber wir haben ja schon gegen Ecuador Katastrophe gespielt."
