Matthew Brennan wins fifth Vuelta stage, race leader Pogacar has a quiet day

Calm after the solo

In the general classification, Pogacar now sits 3:21 minutes ahead of his compatriot Primoz Roglic, who has already won the Vuelta four times. The gap therefore grew slightly compared to the previous day, without Pogacar himself having to take action. Behind the leading duo, the peloton remains tightly packed among the other podium contenders, so the mountain stages of the second week continue to gain importance.

For the young Brennan, the success is further proof of his strong form at this Vuelta. Just 21 years old, the Briton is considered one of his country's greatest sprint and classics talents and has already made a statement with his second stage win of this race. His team was able to prepare the stage victory strategically after the main peloton could no longer launch a late chase in time.

Brennan's second haul

The route led over largely flat terrain along the Mediterranean coast, accompanied by moderate wind from a southerly direction. Brennan attacked from the lead group roughly 30 kilometers before the finish and was able to keep the chasers at bay. The chasing group, led by experienced sprinters from Belgium and Italy, crossed the line about eight seconds too late.

The day before, the mountain stage had already provided talking points. Pogacar's solo over roughly 50 kilometers through the Andalusian mountains had put the overall leader in a comfortable position. Roglic, his eternal rival in the big stage races, was unable to gain time on the rolling sections on Tuesday and slotted in with the main peloton.

Looking ahead to the coming stages, expectations are focused on the mountain duel in the Pyrenees, where Pogacar wants to extend his lead further. Roglic and the rest of the field will try to keep the general classification open and launch attacks of their own. If Pogacar maintains his high level, another overall victory at a Grand Tour is considered likely, especially since Roglic has so far been unable to set any offensive accents.

Outlook on the mountain stages

The weather on the Costa del Azahar remained dry and sunny on race day, providing ideal conditions for the sprinters and breakaway groups. The organizers reported no particular incidents along the route. Around two million spectators are expected over the course of this year's Vuelta, making the race once again one of the most-watched sporting events in Spain.

For Brennan, another sprint opportunity awaits in the coming days if the profile remains flat. His team plans to position him again in the hectic sprint finales. Should he manage a third stage win, he would rise into the ranks of the most successful young riders in recent Vuelta history.

The general classification thus continues to be led by a Slovenian duo that has already dominated the race in previous years. Behind the two, riders from Belgium and Italy are lying in wait for their chances, which are set to open up especially in the upcoming mountain stages. The coming stages will show whether the dominance of the leading duo will also hold up in the high mountains.

The next stage starts on Wednesday with a transition inland, where the profile becomes more rolling and offers the first selection opportunities. For Brennan and the sprinters, the chances of further stage wins may end sooner than for the climbers. The tension in the general classification remains high, however, as Roglic has so far shown only a small part of his potential.
