Schwerin, June 03, 2026
After more than four and a half years of debate, the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern passed the so-called Climate Compatibility Act on June 03, 2026, with which the state is to become largely greenhouse gas neutral by 2045.
What the Law Envisages
The red-red coalition of SPD and Die Linke pushed the law through parliament with their votes. The Greens, CDU, AfD, and the FDP parliamentary group voted against it. Shortly before the final reading, Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) had removed the originally intended binding requirements for rewetting agricultural peat soils from the draft and replaced them with a voluntary regulation.
