Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron held talks on Thursday in the Rhineland on closer cooperation on nuclear deterrence and on the future of the Franco-German friendship treaty.

To kick off the meeting, Macron arrived in the morning at Nörvenich Air Base in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the joint Franco-German Security and Defence Council convened from 8:50 a.m. for consultations on a stronger European security architecture. According to sources close to the negotiations, the talks centered on how France's nuclear deterrence can be more closely integrated into the defense of the European continent – an issue that has gained weight against the backdrop of international tensions.
