Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed confidence that it is possible to reduce the electricity tax for all consumers.

According to Friedrich Merz, the federal government is examining the possibility of a comprehensive reduction in the electricity tax. The goal is to provide relief that benefits all consumers, the CDU politician said.

The call to reduce the electricity tax initially prompted a defensive response from Lars Klingbeil. The SPD politician said the budget does not offer enough room for additional spending.

Klingbeil also pointed out that the federal government, states and municipalities are expected to generate more tax revenue than initially anticipated. Nevertheless, additional spending on this scale would not automatically be financially feasible as a result.
