Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressly welcomed Lithuania's plans to lift the constitutional ban on the stationing of nuclear weapons, following a meeting with the heads of state and government of the Baltic states in Berlin.

Merz praised the Lithuanian initiative on the margins of a meeting with the heads of state and government of the Baltic states in Berlin. He stressed that this was initially a political decision by Lithuania. But it also shows how seriously the country takes the threat from Russia and how ready it is to defend itself.

The CDU politician added that he had not only refrained from criticizing Vilnius's position, but took note of it with respect. With this formulation, Merz explicitly linked Lithuania's readiness to defend itself with the alliance's territory.
