A court in the US state of New Mexico has ordered Facebook parent company Meta to pay a hefty fine in connection with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, because the company allegedly deceived users in the state about access to their data and internal policies on hate speech and disinformation.
Background to the scandal
The state of New Mexico accused Meta of lying to users in the state on three points: who had access to their data, how the company handled hate speech and disinformation on the platform, and how other internal policies were designed. These allegations emerged against the backdrop of the long-running Cambridge Analytica scandal involving the data firm, which is alleged to have harvested Facebook users’ profiles on a large scale and used them for political purposes, including in connection with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
