Hvar, July 16, 2026
A meteotsunami hit the harbor town of Stari Grad on the Croatian island of Hvar on Thursday evening around 11:00 p.m., surprising tourists and residents with rapidly rising and falling water.
Sudden drop and rapid rise
The unusual natural event occurred as a severe thunderstorm moved across the open sea of the northern and partly central Adriatic. As a result, rapid fluctuations in sea level were recorded at several sections of the Croatian coast. Measuring stations first registered a drop in the water of around 60 centimeters below the normal level, before the sea suddenly rose again in a second phase and flooded the seafront promenade. In the shallow harbor basin, boats were left briefly stranded on dry ground.
The sight caused alarm among many tourists experiencing the phenomenon for the first time. As the portal Dalmacija Danas reported, citing eyewitnesses, the water reached knee height in some places. „Die Touristen, die dieses Phänomen zum ersten Mal erlebten, waren schockiert, viele sind davongelaufen. Manchen reichte das Wasser bis zu den Knien“, the report stated. According to the report, the first major flooding was observed in Pula in Istria.
