The Ministry of Social Affairs under Social Affairs Minister Korinna Schumann has presented a proposal according to which women are to receive up to two weeks of paid bereavement time after a miscarriage, and protection against dismissal for expectant mothers is to be expanded.

Background to the initiative

The proposal provides for women to be able to take advantage of up to two weeks of paid leave after a miscarriage in the future. This is intended to supplement the existing maternity protection with a phase of mourning and recovery after the loss of a pregnancy. The weekly benefit (Wochengeld) is also to be paid out during this period.

At the same time, Schumann announced her intention to expand protection against dismissal for pregnant women and mothers. According to this, women who have suffered a miscarriage should continue to have a right to their job and to the existing protection against dismissal. The proposal is currently being discussed in the responsible bodies.
