Austria's Ministry of Transport has rejected a relaxation of truck driving bans on hot days despite the ongoing drought and pointed to a lack of legal basis.

Austria's Ministry of Transport has made clear that there will be no short-term, general suspension of truck driving bans on hot days. A regulatory provision, as apparently applied in Germany, is not provided for in the Road Traffic Act, the Ministry explained regarding the current situation.

The decision comes during a phase in which Europe is suffering from a pronounced drought. In Austria, the water levels of the Danube have dropped sharply, significantly restricting the transport of goods by waterway. The Danube is currently carrying significantly less water than in average summers, as data from the Federal Statistical Office in Germany shows in comparison with the Rhine and Danube.
