Russia's Mirra Andreeva won the French Open final in Paris 6-3, 6-2 against Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska and, at 19, is the youngest winner of the clay-court classic in 34 years.
On Court Philippe Chatrier, Andreeva defeated Chwalinska in two sets on Saturday. Chwalinska, ranked 114th in the world, had come through qualifying to reach the final. In windy conditions, the Russian controlled the match from the start and consistently converted her chances. Chwalinska, who tried to create surprises with unorthodox play, high balls, plenty of slices and drop shots, found no effective answer against the favorite's high-pressure game.
Andreeva had made her tour debut at the age of 15 in 2022 and was celebrated as a tennis prodigy at the time. Two years later, at the French Open, she was booed by the French crowd after a loss to Loïs Boisson because she had angrily hit a ball into the stands out of frustration. She also drew attention at Indian Wells for a nasty verbal outburst at spectators.
