A nuclear scientist and engineer from the United States has presented a concept for determining whether a satellite is carrying a nuclear weapon, publishing the technical details in a peer-reviewed article in the research journal Nature.
Areg Danagoulian conducts research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has developed a detector system there designed to inspect satellites in orbit for nuclear material. This is reported by MIT. According to the institute, the concept is based on a sensor roughly the size of a "large encyclopedia." The idea envisions a system small enough to fit aboard a CubeSat, a type of miniature satellite.
