Moldovan President Maia Sandu has commissioned investment expert Vasile Tofan with the formation of a new government.

Prime minister-designate Vasile Tofan thanked the president for her confidence in an initial reaction and made clear that the signing of the Republic of Moldova's accession agreement with the European Union in 2028 was his highest priority. The 44-year-old thus takes the helm of a country that, since the outbreak of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, has increasingly focused on Western integration.

Tofan brings an economics-oriented background to the office. He is a graduate of Harvard Business School and Erasmus University Rotterdam and previously worked, among other positions, at the investment firm Horizon Capital, which is active in Moldova. This experience in international finance is seen as a signal that the incoming government intends to link economic policy expertise with the EU accession process.
