Bucharest, June 14, 2026

In the EU and NATO member state Romania, the government crisis that has been smoldering for weeks is entering a new round: Nicusor Dan tasked the previously little-known Adrian Vestea of the civic party PNL with forming a government, after his first candidate, Eugen Tomac, had withdrawn ten days following his nomination.

Who is the designated head of government?

Vestea is the county council chairman of the Brasov region and served as Minister of Development from 2023 to 2024. Within the PNL, he belongs to a small faction that is rebelling against the party leader and former head of government Ilie Bolojan. The designated head of government announced that he wanted to form a government that would tackle reforms and keep Romania on a pro-Western course. Vestea is now to present himself and his planned cabinet to parliament for a vote.
