Already in the early afternoon of Monday, huge crowds had gathered on the grounds in front of the Royal Palace. Unofficial estimates put the number of attendees at more than 100,000, who wanted to give their team a fitting welcome after its return from the tournament. The atmosphere on the square was exuberant, even though the team had been eliminated in heartbreaking fashion the previous Saturday.
The Norwegian team had lost the World Cup quarterfinal against England 1:2 after extra time. The squad was knocked out on Saturday but had already made history by reaching the quarterfinals. Accordingly, the reception at home was extremely heartfelt despite the sporting disappointment.
Historic success despite elimination
The official program kicked off with an audience with King Harald at the Royal Palace. Afterward, the team, flanked by the Royal Guard, stepped out in front of the cheering supporters. The players presented themselves on the palace steps before tens of thousands of fans, who filled the square despite changeable weather conditions.
