Following the severe magnitude 7.8 earthquake off the southern island of Mindanao, the death toll in the Philippines has risen to 37, with more than 630 people injured and 17 considered missing.
Situation on Mindanao after the main quake
The quake struck the southern island of Mindanao in the early hours of Monday and was, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the strongest in the world this year. According to civil defense figures, 37 people were killed and more than 630 were injured. Rescue teams continue to search for the missing and are working to reach cut-off communities. Philippine authorities expect the toll to rise further, as several remote municipalities have not yet been fully reached.
