Severe storms with a tropical storm and persistent monsoon rains have killed several people in the Philippines and submerged large parts of the capital region of Manila.
For days now, severe storms have been sweeping across the northern Philippines. The combination of an approaching tropical storm and the annual monsoon rains caused flash floods, landslides, and flooding in several provinces. Rescue teams are working around the clock, and residents are being evacuated from flooded neighborhoods.
In the region around the capital Manila, numerous streets and residential areas were also under water. In some areas, water reached hip height. Residents reported that vehicles were swept away by the floods and many houses were flooded up to the upper floors. Traffic in parts of the metropolitan area came to a temporary standstill.
