Multiple Dead in the Philippines After Severe Storms from Tropical Storm and Monsoon

According to the coast guard, operations were suspended at 20 ports in the central and eastern parts of the country. Fishing boats and ferries were not allowed to set sail because the waves near the coast were too high and visibility was too poor. Several domestic flights were canceled, and classes were also suspended in heavily affected provinces.

The provinces on the main island of Luzon were hit particularly hard. In Batangas, Benguet, and Rizal, entire parts of villages had to be evacuated after rivers burst their banks. Aid organizations set up emergency shelters in schools and community centers and distributed drinking water and emergency packages to thousands of those affected.

The weather agency PAGASA warned that the tropical storm could continue to strengthen over the Philippine Sea and bring additional rainfall in the coming days. Even after the storm has passed, continued monsoon rain is expected, which will further worsen the situation in the already saturated soils.

The Philippines is hit by around 20 tropical storms and typhoons every year. Because of its location in the western Pacific and its geographical features, with extensive coastal regions and mountainous interior, the archipelago is considered one of the countries most severely affected by storms worldwide. Climate researchers point out that more intense rainfall and stronger storms are the consequences of climate change.

Just in recent weeks, flash floods in the Philippines have caused deaths and missing persons. Residents are once again criticizing that the drainage systems in many cities are outdated and insufficient to channel away the masses of water. Mayors of some affected municipalities called on the government to make additional investments in flood protection.

Political Response and Relief Operations

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the national disaster response agencies would work closely with local governments to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance. He called on the population to take warnings from authorities seriously and not to enter flooded areas.

The international community also expressed concern. Aid organizations such as the Red Cross deployed emergency teams to help care for evacuees. Initial fundraising appeals were issued to bring food, medicine, and hygiene supplies to the disaster areas.

The government urged residents to use emergency hotlines and inform family members of their whereabouts. Lists of missing persons and emergency shelters circulated on social networks to help families in their search for their loved ones.
