Wiesbaden, July 7, 2026
In Germany's road traffic, more than 2,800 people lost their lives in 2025, an average of eight per day; the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reported, based on final results, an increase of 62 fatalities compared to 2024.
Eight deaths per day on the roads
The preliminary balance from the Federal Statistical Office is grim: "On average, eight people per day died in road traffic in Germany," the statisticians explained. In total, more than 2,800 people died in such accidents in 2025 – "That was 62 more fatalities than a year earlier."
At the same time, the number of seriously injured declined slightly: "The total number of seriously injured fell slightly last year by 2.9 percent to 49,200." Around two-thirds of all those injured were hurt in accidents within cities and towns. "The large majority of these – around 322,000 – were slightly injured in accidents," it said. Per day, "on average 135 people were seriously injured and 882 people slightly injured."
The majority of traffic fatalities in 2025, however, occurred outside urban areas. "The vast majority of the total 2.52 million [accidents] occurred, at 74 percent, within urban areas, according to the statement." The distribution of fatalities within built-up areas is notable: "63 percent of the people killed in accidents within urban areas were traveling by bicycle or on foot."
