In connection with the heat wave, more than a thousand deaths were recorded in Spain in June, according to authorities.
At least 1,028 deaths last month were attributable to the extreme temperatures, the Carlos III Health Institute said on Wednesday. That is more than double the number of heat-related deaths recorded in the same month the previous year, when 407 fatalities were registered. The estimate is based on a database that compares current daily deaths with historical statistical data.
The agency released the figure on the day this report was published, providing the most comprehensive accounting to date of the health consequences of the ongoing heat wave on the Iberian Peninsula. The AFP news agency picked up the statement and distributed it internationally.
