Copenhagen, 01 July 2026
The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the days-long extreme heat in Europe as a "dress rehearsal" for future summers, while simultaneously warning about insufficient preparation by many countries.
Background to the Warning
The WHO expressed concern on Tuesday (30 June 2026) about the consequences of the ongoing heatwave that had gripped large parts of Europe. WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge said, according to an organization statement: "Diese Hitzewelle ist eine Generalprobe". He also warned: "Die nächsten Sommer werden noch schwieriger werden." Heatwaves are no longer "einmalige Extremereignisse" but recurring crises.
As the statement further noted, the impacts of the current heat are already clearly measurable in several European countries. In France, emergency calls in some cities increased by up to 50 percent. In Spain, an estimated more than 300 heat-related deaths occurred within just a few days. "Sie treten häufiger auf, werden intensiver und dauern länger", Kluge said with regard to such extreme events.
