MT Melsungen face familiar foe Flensburg in European League Final Four with renewed hope

A familiar stage with higher stakes

Flensburg's Danish backcourt player Simon Pytlick expects an even more intense atmosphere. "Diesmal wird es in Hamburg noch heißer als in den letzten beiden Jahren," he said, referring to the more than 10,000 handball fans expected to pack the arena in the Hanseatic city.

Melsungen captain Timo Kastening has consciously put aside the weight of history. The 30-year-old is still waiting for his first title with MT and admitted that the longing for silverware had been a recurring theme before past attempts. "Ich habe es gestrichen in meinem Kopf. Ich will es jetzt spielen und gewinnen," Kastening said.

His teammate Florian Drosten echoed the optimism. "Wir sind vielleicht ein bisschen der Underdog, aber ich freue mich auf unsere Kurve. Wir brauchen einfach eine gute Tagesform und einen großen Kampfgeist," Drosten stated.

New sporting director Jesper Larsson acknowledged recent struggles against the northern rivals. "Gerade gegen Flensburg haben wir Schwierigkeiten gehabt zuletzt. Aber die Mannschaft hat sich dieses Wochenende erkämpft," Larsson told hr-Sport.

Underdog mentality and injury concerns

Head coach Roberto Garcia Parrondo emphasized his team's outsider status. "Die anderen drei Mannschaften haben große Tradition und Geschichte, die andere Mannschaft sind wir. Wir dürfen nicht vergessen, was wir in den vergangenen Jahren alles erreicht haben trotz all der Probleme und Verletzungen," he said, adding: "Wir sollten das FinalFour einfach genießen."

Melsungen can count on former Flensburg player Aaron Mensing, who represented the SG from 2021 to 2023. "Ich habe wieder das Gefühl, dass ich mit vollem Einsatz spielen kann," Mensing said. However, Spanish playmaker Erik Balenciaga (foot) and Belarusian left back Vlad Kulesh (back) missed the recent 33:27 win in Leipzig.

Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Möller is taking part in his sixth Final Four in Hamburg. The 36-year-old, who was named MVP of last year's tournament, described the unique atmosphere: "Da sind nur Handballverrückte in der Halle, sodass man eine besondere Leistung auch besonders genießen kann."

Champions League dream fuels ambition

The stakes extend far beyond the trophy. The European Handball Federation has offered a prize of 100,000 euros for the winner, but more importantly, the champion secures qualification for the Champions League. For Melsungen, currently seventh in the domestic league, and fifth-placed Kiel, this represents a potentially transformative opportunity.

Kastening underlined the dual incentive. "Es geht um einen europäischen Titel und zusätzlich auch noch um die Champions-League-Qualifikation. Das ist Ansporn genug," the German international said. A victory would not only end Melsungen's title drought but also bring the club its first-ever appearance in Europe's premier club competition.

Flensburg have a habit of peaking at the right moment. In each of the past two years, they lost their final league match before Hamburg but then delivered outstanding performances to lift the trophy. Pytlick summed up the mindset: "Wir schauen ab sofort nur nach vorne, werden aber die Rückschlüsse aus dem Spiel in Stuttgart mitnehmen."
